How Can I Avoid Pain After Dental Extraction?

Tips from Ottawa Valley Family Dental for a Smooth and Comfortable Recovery

At Ottawa Valley Family Dental, we understand that having a tooth extracted can feel intimidating—but with the right care and guidance, your recovery can be smooth and manageable. While some discomfort is expected, there are plenty of steps you can take to minimize pain and support the healing process.

Here are our expert tips to help you recover comfortably after a dental extraction:

ree

1. Follow Your Post-Operative Instructions Carefully

Our dental team will provide you with personalized aftercare instructions following your procedure. These are tailored to ensure proper healing and prevent complications. Be sure to follow them closely—especially when it comes to managing pain, maintaining hygiene, and knowing what foods and activities to avoid.

2. Take Medication as Directed

Mild discomfort is normal, but it shouldn’t interfere with your daily life. We may recommend over-the-counter pain relief or prescribe medication based on your needs. Always follow the dosage instructions, and if you experience worsening pain or unusual symptoms, give us a call.

3. Use Cold Compresses to Ease Swelling

Apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to your cheek near the extraction site during the first 24 hours. This can help reduce swelling and numb the area, providing relief. Use the compress for 10–15 minutes at a time with 20-minute breaks in between.

4. Prioritize Rest

Your body heals best when it’s at rest. Avoid strenuous activity for at least 24 hours after your extraction. This includes intense exercise, bending over, or lifting heavy objects—all of which can increase bleeding and delay recovery.

5. Keep the Area Clean (But Gentle!)

Good oral hygiene is crucial, but it’s important not to disrupt the healing socket. Gently brush your teeth while avoiding the extraction site. Use a saltwater rinse or any mouthwash prescribed by your dentist to keep the area clean and free from infection. Protecting the blood clot is key to avoiding dry socket.

6. Eat Soft and Nutritious Foods

For the first few days, stick to soft foods like mashed potatoes, smoothies, yogurt, and soup. Avoid crunchy, spicy, or hot foods that could irritate the healing area. Eating well helps your body recover faster—just make sure it’s gentle on your mouth.

7. Stay Hydrated (But Ditch the Straw!)

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and support healing. However, avoid using straws for at least a few days—suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause complications.

8. Keep Your Follow-Up Appointment

Your follow-up visit is an important part of the healing process. It allows us to assess your recovery, remove any stitches if needed, and ensure everything is on track. Don’t skip it!
